We've had fun discovering those sites that make Yahoo! UK & Ireland one of the best places to find UK or Irish sites on the Internet, and we enjoy sharing a few of them with you. Feel free to send us a note about any sites you think we should consider for a future issue or any general thoughts and comments about Picks of the Week. Click here if you only want to view the list of sites.
Yeah, baby, yeah! Putting the grrrrr back in 'swinger' baby, the Picks Team this week have been licking their lips in anticipation of the imminent release of Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, surely the finest movie event of the year, apart from that Star Wars thingy a few weeks back. This week we thought we'd bring you some fab and totally shagadelic web sites for your perusal.
Kicking things off, the Austin Powers official site itself, and as far as official movie sites go, this one is pretty darn good. There's a section on each of the main stars with a wealth of downloadable goodies like wallpapers, screensavers and even an Austin Powers Windows clock. The entire site is full of colour and animation and a multitude of sound clips and video complete the all-singing all-dancing nature of the site. We award it four stars on the grooviness scale.
Lowering the tone completely (and why not? as Barry Norman would say) we move swiftly on to a craze that has been sweeping the Internet, and our dear friend Austin Powers has also had to succomb to the trend: Austin Powers - The Spy Who Ate My Balls is a simple page that takes a bunch of stills from the film and adds comic captions to them about... ahem... well see for yourself. The craze is not a new one, it all started with a certain Mr T and would you believe it, Yahoo! itself has its very own Ate My Balls category. For its lewdness and crudeness, and we like that kind of thing here at Picks Central, this site gets three stars on the grooviness scale.
Ever wanted to dress like a Fembot or wear a Doctor Evil costume? Well now you can! Austin Powers Costumes is a site that sells all manner of clothing and accessories for the main characters in both movies. From a Felcity Shagwell jumpsuit to Austin Powers glasses and teeth, this site gives you the opportunity to buy them online, and you'll be the envy of everyone at the next fancy-dress party you end up at. A marvellous idea... this site is certainly swinging, and it receives a top-class five stars on the grooviness scale.
Next up is a page that Austin would be proud of. The snappily entitled British Pop Culture in the 1960s contains a wealth of information on UK Sixties pop and film culture. We'll forgive the Webmaster for the cheesey midi files that play while you visit the site, and instead praise the huge amount of content here and the hundreds of illustrations that make the site a pleasure to browse. As well as the extensive A-Z of stars, films and bands, there's some great trivia tidbits and the Cult TV section alone makes for fascinating reading. Another hit with us, and well worthy of five stars on the grooviness scale.
And finally, it's good to see that there's some devoted fans out there. Here's a site just dedicated to one of the characters from the new Austin Powers movie. No, it's not Austin, nor is it Felicity Shagwell, it's not even Dr. Evil... it's Mini-Me, the new mini-Dr. Evil portrayed by Verne Troyer in the latest film. Mini-Me: The Midget Who Shagged Me doesn't have a huge amount of content, but has information on the actor, pictures from the movie and articles and quotes from the Mini-Me character in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. Still, it's a fun site and nevertheless receives a perfectly serviceable three stars on the grooviness scale.
So there we have it. In the words of Dr. Evil himself: "Mini-Me - you complete me." See you next week, baby.
